Choosing the right TPD Setting for Your Watch Winder

It is important to have the correct TPD (Turns Per Day) setting on your watch winder box to ensure your timepiece is being maintained to optimum performance.

Any reputable automatic watch manufacturer will offer clear advice on the recommended TPD for each of their models. You should find this information in the manual or instructions that come with the watch.

This figure can vary from watch to watch, but 500 daily turns is normally the minimum amount and 1,000 turns is the maximum.

Setting the correct number of turns will keep your watch wound to the correct level - for example, a setting of around 650 turns per day will keep a Rolex watch running smoothly.

An automatic watch can't be overwound, unlike a hand-wound watch, but excessive winding will not be good for the highly sensitive internal mechanisms of these precision timepieces. Therefore it is prudent to try to keep to the lower limit of turns per day required to ensure a watch is running efficiently.

When choosing a watch winder it's a good idea to go for one which allows you to programme periods of rest between winding sessions. These regular rest periods are important to enable some spring energy to be used up while the watch is continuing to operate before the next winding session begins. This has the beneficial effect of reducing the risk of stress on the internal mechanism of the watch.
